WHY AFFIRMATIONS DON'T WORK?
Why affirmations don't work, is because it is mainly focussed on the mental body. Your body is your subconscious, in your cells, nervous system, fascia it is intelligence almost an second brain.
This is your internal hard drive. Long before the mind forms words, the body records sensation..
Not as a metaphor, but literally.
This is where most personal development goes wrong.. staying stuck in the mental body.
We are taught that change happens in the brain. That if we repeat the right affirmations, create new neural pathways, and “reprogram” our thinking, our lives will follow.
But the body must feel safe first to allow the affirmations in the subconscious that's why affirmations don't work directly.
Without safety, the mind does not surrender, it keeps on looping and doesn't process any affirmation.
Without safety, affirmations remain surface-level.
Without safety, the nervous system resists, even if the words are beautiful.
Yes, the brain plays a role. Neural pathways matter. Thought patterns matter. But the brain does not operate in isolation.
The nervous system is constantly scanning:
Am I safe?
Am I allowed?
Is it okay to relax?
Is it safe to be seen, felt, expressed?
If the body answers no, the subconscious does not update, no matter how convincing the affirmation sounds. This is why affirmations don't work.
This is why women can say:
“I am confident” while their chest tightens
“I am safe” while their breath shortens
“I trust myself” while their body braces
The words are spoken by the mind.
The body tells the truth. The nervous system is highly intelligent.
Affirmations attempt to overwrite existing patterns.
But the body does not change through command, it changes through experience.
When the nervous system is in:
Fight
Flight
Freeze
Fawn
It is prioritizing survival, not belief change.
In this state, affirmations can actually increase internal conflict the looping. The mind pushes forward while the body pulls back. This split drains energy and often leads women to feel discouraged, ashamed, or disconnected from themselves.
From a somatic perspective, this isn’t resistance, it’s intelligence.
The body will not allow reprogramming until it feels safe enough to let go of what once protected it to allow it in and surrender to it, the new truth.
Reprogramming does not begin with new thoughts. It begins with regulation.
When the body feels safe:
Muscles soften
Breath deepens
Fascia unwinds
The nervous system shifts out of defense
Only then can the mind release control. This is the missing link in affirmation culture.
Why affirmations don't work because it is asking the mind to lead.
Somatic work allows the body to lead and the mind follows naturally.
When safety is present, the brain becomes flexible. Neuroplasticity increases. New pathways can form because the system is no longer bracing against change.
This is harmony, not force.
Women are often taught, explicitly or subtly, to override their bodies.
To stay pleasant.
To stay productive.
To stay positive.
To push through discomfort.
Affirmations often reinforce this pattern by asking women to think differently instead of listen more deeply.
But the feminine nervous system is relational, cyclical, and sensation-based.
It responds to:
Presence
Attunement
Slowness
Safety
When these elements are missing, the body does not consent to change.
And without consent, no transformation lasts.
Embodiment is the moment the body and mind stop competing.
It is when:
The body feels safe enough to soften
The subconscious no longer needs to protect
The mind no longer needs to control
In embodiment work, beliefs change because the felt experience has changed.
You don’t convince yourself you are worthy.
Your body stops bracing against receiving.
You don’t repeat “I am safe.”
Your nervous system experiences safety in real time.
This is why embodied change feels quieter, but deeper.
And why it lasts.
This doesn’t mean language has no place.
It means language must come after regulation, not before.
Instead of repeating affirmations, begin with:
Tracking sensation in the body
Allowing breath to move without control
Noticing areas of tension or collapse
Letting the nervous system orient to safety
Giving the body time to update its signals
When the body settles, the right words arise naturally.
And when they do, they land, not because you forced belief, but because the body agrees.
Affirmations don’t fail because they’re wrong.
They fail because they are incomplete.
They speak to the mind while ignoring the subconscious intelligence of the body.
True transformation happens when:
The body feels safe
The nervous system is regulated
The subconscious no longer needs to defend
The mind is free to reorganize
This is where somatic work changes everything.
You don’t need to think harder.
You don’t need to try more.
You don’t need better words.
You need safety.
You need embodiment.
You need harmony between mind and body.
Your body already knows the way.
Always..
Welcome home beautiful!
