You already see it… so why does it keep happening?
You’ve done a lot of work on yourself right?
You’re aware of your internal patterns.
You can catch your triggers.
Sometimes you even know exactly what’s about to happen next.
And still…
You end up doing the same thing.
The same reactions.
The same dynamics.
The same version of you showing up again.
That’s the frustrating part.
Because it’s not confusion anymore.
👉 You see it clearly… but nothing actually changes.
No one really says this directly:
👉 Awareness doesn’t break patterns.
It helps you notice them.
It helps you understand where they come from.
But in the moment it matters most?
You still default to the same response.
Not because you’re failing.
But because the pattern isn’t just mental.
What you keep repeating once had a purpose.
It helped you:
stay safe
avoid rejection
manage emotions
stay in control
So your system learned:
👉 “This works. Keep doing it.”
Even now, when it’s no longer helping you.
That’s why you can think:
“I don’t want to do this again”
…and still find yourself doing it anyway.
Change doesn’t happen when you’re reflecting on your life.
It doesn’t happen when you’re journaling about it later.
👉 It happens in the exact moment the pattern shows up.
That’s the only place where something different can actually happen.
And most miss that moment.
Not more thinking.
Not more analyzing.
It’s this:
👉 catch it → pause → choose differently
Let’s slow that down.
This is the shift.
From:
“I did it again…”
To:
“I see it right now.”
when you feel yourself shutting down
when you start over-explaining
when your mind begins to spiral
That awareness in the moment is where change begins.
Before you respond:
take a breath
slow your body
give yourself a second
You don’t need to fix anything yet.
👉 Just don’t go on autopilot.
This is the part that feels uncomfortable.
Because your system wants what’s familiar.
But instead:
say less instead of explaining everything
stay instead of pulling away
act instead of overthinking
pause instead of saying yes immediately
It might feel wrong.
It’s not wrong.
👉 It’s just new.
This is where people go back.
The urge to return to the old pattern will be strong.
Because it feels:
known
predictable
safe
But if you stay—even slightly longer than usual—
something starts to shift.
You don’t break a pattern once.
You break it by:
👉 choosing differently again and again
In real situations.
That’s how something new becomes natural.
If you’ve been doing the work and still feel stuck…
It’s not because you’re doing it wrong.
It’s because you stopped at awareness.
And real change starts after that.
Overthinking
You usually analyze everything → this time, you take one small step
People-pleasing
You usually say yes → this time, you pause before answering
Avoidance
You usually withdraw → this time, you stay present a little longer
Self-sabotage
You usually stop halfway → this time, you follow through
Sometimes it feels automatic.
Like something takes over before you can stop it.
That’s not in your head.
👉 That’s your body responding.
Which means you can’t always think your way out of it.
You have to work with what’s happening underneath.
If you want to go deeper into that level, you can explore START here about where to go next. This can be base practices, integration tools or trying an 1:1 session to go deeper. Explore it here.
Let’s keep this real:
it will feel uncomfortable
it will feel unfamiliar
you will want to go back
That doesn’t mean you’re failing.
👉 It means you’re no longer doing what’s automatic.
You don’t break patterns by understanding them.
You break them by:
noticing them in real time in the body
interrupting the response
choosing something different
staying with that choice and moving forward
Until it becomes who you are, you move with it and as it. Without this you will otherwise never intterupt the pattern.
Not when you know more.
Not when you’ve “healed enough.”
But when you stop repeating what you already understand.
